Imperial Dragon Boat

lon005

Imperial Dragon Boat was a replicate of the painted pleasure boat with which the Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty took to Southern China. Dragon is a symbol of the Chinese royals. This boat is in the shape of a dragon and a palace with an arch roof. There is a two-story attic, where events, dances and performances take place.

Dragon boats can best highlight the Chinese elements. According to history literature and paintings, ancient dragon boats in China were large in scale and luxurious in design. The design was based on the pleasure boats the royal family took. It can be traced back to the Sui and Tang Dynasties (A.D. 581-907). The dragon-shaped boat is as beautiful and elegant as the royal ships overseas. It is the pride of the Chinese in the history of shipbuilding.

Imperial Dragon Boat has a streamlined and elegant body, with evenly distributed over 20 outside plates. The equinoctial front gradually widens into the quadratic one in the middle, and slowly narrows to single point at the back. Each outside plate is equal in size, with alternative bugles and concaves at the connecting point. It is a daunting challenge to ensure all the lines are even.

The tail is a finish-off of the outside plates, with all the lines extending toward the end. The craftsmanship required is very difficult to master.

The palace tiles, carved out from wood with a drill, are very much like the real thing. Mass production of the tiles is possible with the right tool. Dasian Temple was completed with the same technique.

The fences were created with pile-connection techniques. Holes were drilled on each fence and wooden rods were inserted one by one. The bending was made with heating.

The ornament “Jumping over the Dragon Gate” at the corner can be removed for transportation.

The dragon beard extends from the head to the tail, curving in a U-shape.

As a general rule, the deeper the draft line, the better. Sea ships, such as Treasure Ship of Zheng He, have their bottoms in the V shape. However, the bottom of river boats is in the U shape because their draft line is shallower. As Imperial Dragon Boat sails in the river, it has a wider space at the bottom. They are dragged along or powered with paddles. Oars are the control system.
